Glue failure in edge banding rarely comes from one bad batch. It usually reflects a mismatch among adhesive type, machine settings, panel moisture, and maintenance. Buyers comparing edge banders should look beyond motor kW and working width. Ask whether the machine controls glue pot temperature within ±2°C, supports 0.4–3 mm edge tape, and holds pressure rollers at 2–4 bar. These details decide whether edge banding glue bonds consistently.

EVA hot melt is forgiving and suits interior furniture at 160–200°C, but it softens under heat and moisture. PUR reactive glue needs tighter control, often 120–150°C, and cures with ambient moisture; the bond becomes water-resistant but irreversible. If EVA is run at PUR temperatures, viscosity rises, flow drops, and glue lines open. If PUR is overheated, it skins in the pot and loses reactivity. Match adhesive chemistry to climate, edge material, and end use.

Temperature faults are the most common edge bander troubleshooting call. A dirty glue pot, carbonized EVA, or a worn PTFE coating can delay heat transfer by 10–20°C. Clean the pot weekly with compatible purging agent, not sharp scrapers. Check the thermocouple against a calibrated probe monthly; a 5°C error can cause poor wetting on 0.4 mm PVC or stringing on 2 mm ABS. Replace rollers and glue nozzles when wear exceeds 0.2 mm.

Feed speed and pressure determine whether molten glue wets and compresses the joint. At 12–20 m/min, EVA open time may be only 8–15 seconds, so transfer must be fast and even. Pressure rollers should apply 2–4 bar across the panel; too little leaves a thick glue line, too much starves the joint and squeezes glue out. For 0.4–1 mm edges, 2.5–3.5 bar usually works; for 2–3 mm edges, verify roller alignment first.

Substrate conditions cause silent glue failure. MDF or particleboard with 8–12% moisture content bonds well; above 12%, steam pockets and weak adhesion appear. Dust, silicone, oil, or release agents on melamine, PVC, or ABS block adhesion. Machined edges should be flat and clean, with no burnish glaze. Store panels in the shop for 24–48 hours before banding. For high-humidity markets, specify PUR or apply a moisture-resistant primer when the edge bander supports it.

Practical fixes start with a first-piece test. Measure glue line thickness at 0.1–0.3 mm, check edge overhang, and pull-test after 24 hours. Adjust temperature in 5°C steps, not 20°C jumps. Confirm glue spread is uniform every 50–100 panels. On used machines, inspect pressure rollers for flat spots, drive belts for slippage, and encoders for speed drift. A 10% speed variation can create intermittent no-glue sections that look like adhesive defects.

When specifying an edge bander, compare temperature control, glue pot capacity, roller pressure range, and spare-part access.
